Getting Summer Ready

Hi Everyone!

Hope you are all doing well. It has been a while since I made a post on the blog but I have been busy with final exams. I am finally done the first part of my exam and deserve a small break. As the weather in Edmonton starts to improve I can’t help but day dream about summer! I took a post exam trip to the mall and stocked up on some great summer essentials. With warmer weather and shorter hemlines come other concerns such as waxing! When I am busy with school the small things are put on hold. When Sina from Buff Wax Spot in Edmonton approached me to try out her wax bar I was excited to give it a try. I needed a wax and this was a great way to try a new local business.

The Wax Bar concept was something that was new to me so I sat down with Sina and did a Q &A.

Q. What is a wax bar?

A. A wax bar is a beauty bar dedicated to providing waxing, and waxing only! This is concept exists in major cities but is new to Edmonton.

Q. Why did you decide to open a wax bar in Edmonton?

A. The wax bar concept is a business model that I’ve always admired. The idea of taking a basic beauty service, picking apart the process, and perfecting each step was appealing. After moving to Edmonton I couldn’t find a place to get waxed where the service was consistent and I felt comfortable. I used to go back to Toronto often and got my waxing done there. After a while I needed to find  a place where wax services were reliable and reasonably priced, and decided to open my own wax bar!  The four main pillars Buff Wax Spot is built on are cleanliness, meticulousness, speed waxing and affordability. We have highly trained Wax Techs who can provide you with the best wax services in Edmonton.

Q. What types of waxes do you use?

A. In order to understand the waxing business, I took a wax certification course in Calgary. After six months of testing various waxes, I found our dream wax. At Buff Wax Spot, we use a combination of hard wax and strip wax. The hard wax is great for small, sensitive areas of the body while strip wax does the heavy lifting for arms, legs, back, etc.

Q. How long should people wait between appointments?

A. If you’ve been shaving, come in after at least two weeks post-shave. This ensures the hairs are long enough for the wax to grab. Once you begin waxing, wait 4-5 weeks between appointments. We suggest waiting 4-5 weeks between waxing since the hair is at the most active stage of growth about every 4 weeks. With consistent wax appointments, hair growth reduces and hairs come back finer and sparser since waxing pulls the hair out from the root, therefore damaging its ability to regenerate. We really recommend being diligent for the first 5-6 months of waxing to ensure maximum reduction in hair growth and coarseness. You WILL notice the difference!

Q. For those waxing for the first time is there anything to do in order to minimize the pain?

A. Your pain tolerance is unique to you so don’t bother reading about other people’s experiences online! Ultimately, you’ll just need to try waxing to see if it’s for you. Excessive caffeine, a tough workout, a rough patch in your relationship or job, and the week before your period all affect your pain tolerance. You can take an over-the-counter painkiller 30min before your appointment if you like. We actually don’t recommend using a numbing cream because it can affect your perception of temperature and also leaves a greasy film on the skin. It is important to tell your Wax Techs about pre-existing medical conditions, anti-aging or anti-acne products you’re using, and what medications you’re on. For example, blood thinners can lead to more bruising.

At Buff Wax Spot, we specialize in speed waxing, our waxes the best on the market, and our wax technique is unparalleled. Our favourite moments are when first-timers exclaim that it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be, and that they wished they’d tried it sooner!

Q. What do you recommend doing after waxing?

A. The day of your wax, less is more. We have a post-wax checklist in every room at Buff Wax Spot that outlines the do’s and don’ts, post-wax. Our most important recommendation is to stay away from any sweaty exercise routines, hot tubs, saunas or swimming pools for 24 hours in order to minimize chaffing or inflammation. Also, daily exfoliation post-wax is absolutely essential to keep your pores open and avoid ingrown hairs. For exfoliants, we recommend a combination of manual exfoliation (e.g., with a dry brush) to reduce buildup of dead skin and a chemical exfoliant (e.g., products that contain salicylic, lactic and/or glycolic acid) to clear oil and dirt from the pores which can lead to congestion and ingrown hairs.

Q. What are the benefits of waxing?

A. In the short-term, you can visibly see and feel the difference in hair growth and texture. Plus, it’s so much easier letting a professional take care of your hair removal needs.  Let’s face it, nobody has time for awkward contortionist acts to get a razor where it doesn’t belong in the first place! Shaving is very abrasive and rough on the skin. Long-term benefits of waxing include permanent, reduced hair growth over time. Waxing is the most affordable, permanent hair reduction method on the market. Waxing also purges the skin’s surface of dead skin leaving it soft and glowing. For legs and arms, the exfoliation from waxing can do wonders for dry skin.

Q. Is a wax bar just for women?

A. Buff Wax Spot is for women AND men! Manscaping in particular is on the rise (hello man-brows and dudezilians!) because men are just as frustrated with shaving as women are. We pride ourselves on our gender neutral, welcoming environment. Approximately 15% of our clientele are men. Back, chest and intimate waxing are the most popular services for men at Buff Wax Spot.

Hope this post helps all of you look into you options for waxing and get ready for summer. See if your city has a wax bar and if you live in Edmonton check out Buff Wax Spot! I loved my experience. I had both an underarm and a Bare Buff Brazilian wax. I had not had a wax in a while and my services was efficient had minimally painful. My Wax Tech was friendly and knowledgeable which put me at ease. I would definitively return for future services!

Jord Wood Watches

It’s contest time, we have partnered up with Jord Wood Watches and you have a chance to win a gift card towards one of your own!

img_7373

Watches are a great way to make an everyday statement, especially for those of us who have a dress code or uniform to stick to at work. I have been wanting a wood watch of my own for a while and am definitely a little jealous of my boyfriends Walnut and Jet Black Conway Wtch. It is definitely a conversation piece but even better is that it is lightweight and completely comfortable and great for everyday wear.

img_7408

They have a lot of different styles available including some with exposed mechanism. What sets the Jord watches apart from some of the other wood watches out there is the mix of wood and other materials. While they do have available whole wood watches my favorite are the mixed watches with the colored watch faces. The contrast really makes the wood pop! The black face on his watch really brings out the darker textures in the walnut.

The watch is actually automatic and this is definitely John’s favorite feature. After the first winding just wearing the watch keeps it active which makes for easy care. img_7384

These watches are a great addition to anyone’s wardrobe – they make a really unique and memorable gift…whether for yourself or that someone special in your life. Make sure to check out the contest and enter to win $100 or $25 gift codes towards  your own Wood Watch! The contest ends on March 12th so make sure you get your entry in before then.

Note: e gift codes will expire April 30,2017

Falling for Fall

Hello lovelies!

I can’t believe it has been months since my last blog post. Sorry for the long hiatus! This is my final year of my radiology residency which means I write my final exam in May. Unfortunately that takes priority over any sort of life 😢 once that is done I promise to post more frequently. If you do want more frequent updates make sure you check our Instagram!

I wanted to make a post today since it is fall and I ❤️❤️❤️ fall fashion. I love that it still warm enough for dresses and skirts without tights but cold enough for layers.

Two of my fave new colors for fall are maroon and forest green. I recently found this gorgeous forest green knit skirt at Winners and knew it was perfect. I love the front zipper detail. When choosing a top I wanted to accentuate the high waste. I recently bought a turtleneck that is a very fine material. I love turtlenecks for fall but finding one that fits well and isn’t bulky can be hard. I like this thinner material since it still shows off my shape.

I wanted to show off my legs since it was still warm out so went with ankle boots. A simple black bucket bag and sunglasses completed the look.

I think this is a perfect way to start off my fall outfits! I hope to make a few more fall blog posts but check Instagram for more frequent ideas!

Bare it All…or at least my Shoulders

The off the shoulder trend has been around for a little while now and I am surprised it has taken me so long to do a post about it!

If you had asked me a few years ago if I would do strapless or off the shoulder clothing I would’ve said ‘never’! I am not a fan of wearing strapless bras so it did not make the thought of wearing such clothing possible. After many years I finally found a strapless bra that I love!

After this great find I was able to embrace many new clothing options. I am going to do three posts on the off the shoulder trend. Todays’ post will be about a casual approach. The second will be a classier dressed up take. The last more of a fun approach for a night out.

For today’s casual outfit I am focusing on off the shoulder tops. There are SO many off the shoulder tops out there on the market that it is hard to just choose one. One feature that I looked for in my top was the structure around the neckline: how low was is, how tight did it fit, was there any elastic? I have no preference regarding the use of elastic in the neckline. If the top is cut well there really is no need for the elastic.

The top I ended up choosing was a cute blue gingham top from Zara. What I love about this top are the sleeves. They have a bit of volume and they tie at the cuffs. Since the top has a looser fit I decided to pair it with a more fitted bottom: black shorts. I love the black with the more feminine gingham top.

To let the top stand out I paired the outfit with black clogs and a black hat. I wore this outfit while I was visiting Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. It was the perfect easy breezy summer outfit!

Have a great week loves! ❤️

Bold in Blush

I love blush coloured clothing. While blush is thought of as a subdued colour when styled correctly it can make an elegant and strong statement.

I love tonal dressing and one of my favourite colours to do this with is blush. Blush works well for me since I have a darker skin tone so it does not look too nude. However, if you have a paler skin tone choosing a blush with more of a pink undertone works well and will not wash you out.

Recently I wore a tonal blush outfit to work. I have to say it is one of my recent favourite outfits. The pants and top are actually a few years old but they are timeless and well constructed. The pants are a darker colour but I still consider them to be on the  blush spectrum. The pants are an example of a blush with a stronger pink undertone, the colour almost looks like a dusty rose. Since the pants have a looser fit I chose a more fitted top.

Pants and Top: Aritzia, Shoes: J Crew, Bag: Gucci

I chose simple accessories that are white crystal or had pink/blush stones. My shoes are patent blush sandals.

The one pop of colour in this outfit comes from my new bag. Although a bright colour with a bold print I had been able to easily pair this bag with many outfits (check out our Instagram for ideas). This bag is from Gucci and was on sale. I love that the flowers incorporate blush, pink, orange, yellow, red and white. By already having all those colours in the bag you can easily pair this bag with outfits of various colours.

This is a great look for work and translates easily to after work drinks or dinner.  Tonal dressing is a great way to make a statement so hope you give it a try. Printed handbags  are big right now and while many stear away from them since they can be hard to match it isn’t as hard as you think!

Have a great week loves and hopefully now that I am back at home I will have more time to post ❤️

Mustard and Navy

Hi everyone! I am finally back in Edmonton so expect to see more posts from us.

While travelling recently I discovered how much I love Ann Taylor clothing. We do not have Ann Taylor in Edmonton so I went a little crazy shopping there. They have such fun prints and colors!

After my mini shopping spree there I realized a lot of what I bought was either navy or a mustard color. This is such a gorgeous color combination. I am surprised I had never thought of it before. What surprised me was already how much navy and mustard clothing I own. While I love mustard and yellows I am not a fan of pairing them with black. Not sure why, I think to a certain degree I feel it looks a lot like a bumble bee. I have the same issue with pairing orange and black, too Halloween.

However, navy is a great neutral to pair with yellow and mustards! I also feel like the richness of the navy brings out the gold undertones in the mustard color. Here are a few of the outfits I created with this color combination.

I love the polka dots with stripes. The pants are J Crew and the sweater is Ann Taylor.

This is an old top and pants set I got in Portugal that I love. I never realized the pattern incorporates mustard and navy. My new sweater was the perfect match!

When I tried this outfit on in the store my friend said “I could see you running around New York in this” so that is exactly what I did

If you want to see one last mustard and navy outfit check out the outfit in my last post on our brunch at Laduree in NYC.

Hope this inspires you to try this color combination or at least give some new combinations a try! Have a great week!

❤️ Sam

Laduree SOHO

Recently during my month long stay in Washington DC I took a weekend trip with some of my friends to New York. While I will do a NYC weekend trip post I wanted to highlight one of the restaurants we had been able to go to.

I am sure many of you have heard about Laduree the pastry shop from Paris and lucky for many of us they now have many overseas locations. One of their international locations is the Laduree in Soho. I love Laduree so we decided to go there for breakfast.

If you are in NYC or visiting I highly recommend breakfast there! The food was delicious and the service was great.

I decided to have their set breakfast which came with eggs (made how you like so I had eggs Benedict, one of the girls had sunny side up and the last an omelette), various buns, fruit salad, juice (orange or grapefruit) and tea or coffee (including lattes, capacinnos etc). I thought for all the options and add ones this was a great value.

Processed with VSCO with s3 presetProcessed with VSCO with s3 presetProcessed with VSCO with s3 presetProcessed with VSCO with s3 preset

The food was honestly delicious. My eggs Benedict were perfectly poached and came on a crisp brioche toast. We each got 4 different buns/pastries including croissants. The pastries were warm and light but very filling. The fruit salad was a nice touch and has raspberries and passion fruit which I love.

Our server was great and very helpful. I wanted an outfit photo so he let me go to the patio. I had just bought this pineapple print Ann Taylor dress while in the states and I thought brunch was the perfect time to wear it. It matched perfectly with my striped Ann Taylor sweater. I matched it with my Valentino rock studs and Karen Walker sunglasses. It felt like the perfect NYC breakfast/brunch outfit.
